When Zach Profit, son of Terry and Vicki Profit of rural Van Wert, marched into Ohio Stadium on September 8, 2007 as a member of the famous Ohio State University Marching Band, it was the first time he had ever marched at a football game.

Paulding County also has a member of the OSU Marching Band. Her name is Rachel Gangwer.

The Van Wert & Paulding Chapter of the Ohio State University Alumni Club wishes both band members the very best!

Van Wert's Joel Penton & Eric Hurless share many common bonds!

COLUMBUS -- Two Van Wert natives and Van Wert High School Graduates, Joel Penton and Eric Hurless, each received their college degrees Sunday in graduation ceremonies in historic St. John's Arena, on the campus of The Ohio State University.

Penton, who plays defensive tackle for the #1 Buckeyes and has one more game to play in his collegiate football career (The National Championship Game against Florida in January, 2007), graduated Sunday with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Hurless, who is a member of and leader in The Ohio State University Marching Band, graduated Sunday with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Degree, in The Max M. Fisher College of Business.

Besides graduating Sunday, there are many things in both Joel Penton's and Eric Hurless' life that are identical. Here are a few of them: Both of Penton's and Hurless' fathers work at Van Wert's Central Insurance Agency; both of their mothers are high school teachers; both are the youngest in their respective families; Joel's oldest sister Emily, and Eric's older brother Jamie, both graduated in 1992; both Penton and Hurless were raised in Van Wert's First United Methodist Church; Joel's wife and Eric's fiancée are both in the medical field; and finally, both Penton and Hurless graduated from VWHS in 2002, and also OSU in December, 2006.

The Commencement Services Sunday in OSU's historic St. John's Arena, was the 375th Graduation Commencement held, since the opening of The Ohio State University in 1878. Also since 1878, The Ohio State University has awarded an amazing 510,620 degrees. OSU awarded 2,096 degrees this past quarter, and in the last decade, a total of 105,920 degrees were awarded by OSU.
